FAT File Format
The File Allocation Table (FAT) file format is one of the oldest and most widely used file systems in computing. Originally developed by Microsoft in the late 1970s, FAT was designed to manage files and directories on floppy disks, but has since evolved to support a variety of storage devices including hard drives, USB flash drives, and SD cards.
History
FAT emerged in 1977 with the introduction of FAT12, which could handle up to 12 bits per cluster. This was followed by FAT16 in the 1980s, which expanded the capabilities of its predecessor by supporting larger disks and files. With the rise of larger storage media, FAT32 was introduced in 1996, allowing for volumes up to 2 TB and file sizes up to 4 GB.
The FAT file system has undergone various updates and revisions over the decades, including exFAT (Extended File Allocation Table), which was introduced in 2006. exFAT was designed to handle larger files and is optimized for flash drives and other memory cards, making it ideal for modern devices like digital cameras and smartphones.
