XAPI File Format
The xAPI file format, also known as Experience API or Tin Can API, is a modern specification that enables learning systems to communicate and track learning experiences. It was developed by the Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) Initiative, which is part of the United States Department of Defense, as a successor to the SCORM (Sharable Content Object Reference Model) standard.
History
The development of xAPI began around 2010 as a response to the limitations of SCORM, which was primarily designed for tracking web-based e-learning courses. SCORM had several constraints, such as its inability to track learning experiences outside of traditional e-learning environments, which became increasingly relevant with the rise of mobile learning, simulations, and informal learning.
In 2013, the first version of xAPI was released, allowing for a more robust and flexible way to track a wide range of learning experiences, including mobile learning, virtual reality, and social learning. The xAPI standard utilizes statements that follow a simple structure: “[Actor] verb [object],” which allows it to record a wide variety of interactions in a consistent manner. These statements can be sent to a Learning Record Store (LRS), which collects and stores this data for analysis and reporting.
