History
The GIF format was developed by a team led by Steve Wilhite at CompuServe. The original version of GIF, known as GIF87a, was limited to a palette of 256 colors and featured a simple compression algorithm called Lempel-Ziv-Welch (LZW). This compression method allowed for efficient storage and transmission of images, which was essential during the early days of the internet.
In 1989, an improved version called GIF89a was released, adding support for transparent backgrounds and metadata, such as textual descriptions of images. This version solidified GIF’s position as a crucial format for web graphics.
Despite its popularity, the GIF format faced legal challenges in the late 1990s due to patent issues surrounding the LZW compression algorithm. In 2004, however, the patent expired, leading to a resurgence in the format’s use, particularly for animations.
